The Superintendent of the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS), Mr. Benjamin Jacob, has disclosed that lack of textbooks and qualified teachers were serious challenges of the educational sector in the country.Speaking at the regular press briefing of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism on Thursday June 5, 2014 on Capitol Hill, Superintendent Jacob said Liberia cannot achieve quality education in the absence of text books and well trained teachers.Mr. Jacob said as part of his program as superintendent of MCSS, he will ensure that almost all of the MCSSS schools in the country will have counselors that will help students and teachers achieve their goals.According to the superintendent, teachers and principals of MCSS have not been able to obtain training since the civil war.He assured the public of creating the necessary avenues to ensure that training is conducted as part of this year’s plan.According to Mr. Jacob, the issues of retroactive payments was already into the budget and will take effect at the end of June and payment will be made into accounts of teachers.According to the superintendent, education can only be achieved through the involvement of teachers, parents as well as the students.He said that they are working to ensure that parents be able to visit their children’s school in order to know their teachers.Mr. Jacob said, “We will ensure that education is attained in our schools, this is something that we have been working on for several months and trying to set the record straight.”The superintendent further explained that, they have been able to get a little quantity of textbooks and other school materials that are currently serving students at different grade levels in the country.The MCSS boss said, a vibrant Policy about Parents Teachers Association (PTA) is being put in place to allow parents be a part of the school, visit the classroom and also know how the teachers teach their children.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)

There were tense scenes in Letterkenny council this morning after Cllr John O’Donnell failed to get a second nomination to the role of Mayor.The Milford area councillor was tipped to become the next chairperson of the electoral area. He was formally proposed by Independent Cllr Kevin Bradley at this morning’s meeting in Letterkenny. However, there was silence in the room when outgoing Mayor Ian McGarvey called for a person to second the proposal.The meeting was adjourned for 15 minutes. Farm Bureau, Ohio’s largest organization for farm, food and rural interests, believes Issue 1 is not a viable approach to the state’s opioid crisis. “Our state and county Farm Bureaus have been at the forefront of drug abuse prevention in rural Ohio,” said Frank Burkett III, a dairy farmer and president of Ohio Farm Bureau. “We’ve dug deeply into understanding Ohio’s massive drug problems. Issue 1 runs counter to much of what our members believe are effective steps to reducing the impact of drugs on our communities.”The organization also believes that a constitutional amendment is not the best mechanism for addressing Ohio’s addiction and drug trafficking problems, especially when the initiative is funded by large out-of-state interests. Farm Bureau trustees also were concerned that Issue 1 would harm the Ohio court system’s ability to effectively deal with illegal drugs. Further, Issue 1 could be a heavy burden on Ohio taxpayers with few assurances of positive results. Other concerns include negative impacts on crime rates and on the availability of a reliable workforce.“Farm Bureau joins with law enforcement, judges and prosecutors, prevention agencies, business groups, elected officials, leading editorial boards and others to encourage Ohioans to vote no on State Issue 1,” Burkett said. “We need solutions to the drug crisis, but Issue 1 is not the answer.” This is a news release for use by journalists. North Korea’s Kim Un Guk broke the world record in men’s 62kg category weightlifting on the way to win gold at the London Olympics on Monday.Kim opened up a big lead by snatching 153kg, equalling the world record held by Chinese lifter Shi Zhiyong since 2002, Xinhua reported. He held on to his lead in the clean and jerk, lifting 174kg to notch a world and Olympic record total of 327kg. zoom The shipping industry’s total employment contribution has increased to 2.1 million people while the total GDP contribution is estimated to have been EUR 140 billion in 2015.The European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) update on the economic value of the EU shipping industry, commissioned from Oxford Economics, shows that the sector directly employed 640,000 people and supported an EUR 57 billion contribution to GDP in 2015.ECSA’s report further indicates that, at EUR 89,000 per worker in 2015, productivity in the EU shipping industry remains above the EU average.“The latest Oxford Economics figures underline that shipping remains a solid contributor to the European agenda of jobs and growth,” Patrick Verhoeven, ECSA Secretary General, said.“Compared to 2013 figures, we see a modest increase in both employment and value-added figures.”The Oxford Economics report finds that around four-fifths of direct employment occurs at sea. Officers account for an estimated 42% of positions at sea, and ratings 58%. 40% of the 516,000 seafarers employed in the EU shipping industry are estimated to be EU/EEA nationals.“Although it is an estimated figure, the percentage of EU/EEA seafarers appears to remain fairly stable,” Verhoeven said, adding that this is a positive sign, given the challenging market circumstances most European shipping companies still operate in.
