Discover New Music Blogs With Extension.FM’s New Recommender

Extension.fm, a New York startup that provides a browser plug-in that captures all the MP3 files you come across and turns them into a playlist, has just announced the creation of a new experimental Labs department.First entry into Extension’s Labs is something the company calls The Super Awesome Music Blog Finder Thingy ™. Enter your Last.fm username and it will recommend new music blogs that have posted music from artists you’ve listened to the most over the last 30 days. It’s not great, yet, but it could make a pretty great feature once more fully baked. If you haven’t scrobbled (ouch) anything with your Last.fm account in the last 30 days, this won’t do much for you. I’ve been fortunate enough to be testing Spotify for the past few months, and just started using the Spotibot recommendation service, so few other music services have moved me. But three cheers for innovation in music recommendation! In this case, Extension is using the EchoNest API, which is hot.Unfortunately, the recommendations include too many low-quality spammy blogs, blogs that link to torrents (a little less easy to listen to) and generally need some refinement. Extension.fm was founded by Dan Kantor, the creator of AOL-acquired Streampad and the feature in Yahoo’s Delicious that renders links to MP3 files playable, and invested in this Spring by Spark Capital, Betaworks, Founder Collective (Caterina Fake, Chris Dixon and others) and Dave Morgan (founder of Tacoda and Real Media). In other words, chances are good that something interesting is going to happen over there. If that includes recommendations based on data acquired from services all around the web and stored in a central repository, that’s cool. marshall kirkpatrick Related Posts last_img read more

The Incredible Litepanels Astra 6X LED Fixture and You

first_imgPortabilityA great perk of the Astra series is its form factor and portability. If you’re a traveling filmmaker, the Astra 6x is an exceptional option, offering portability and ease of use on set. Now, I’m a big fan of the ARRI Skypanel series; however, traveling with those fixtures is a challenge. The Astra 6X overcomes this. However, you do sacrifice output from the fixture in comparison to an ARRI Skypanel. With many softbox options for the Astra, keeping it compact and getting a pleasant light quality is not a challenge.QualityWith a 95 CRI, the Astra 6X is perfect for any production. The light is fully dimmable from 0 – 100% with no color shift. If you’ve ever dimmed tungsten fixtures, you know how color shift can be an issue with dimming; however, this is not the case with the Astra 6X.Also, in comparison to other LED fixtures of similar build, the Litepanels feature some of the strongest construction. This will ensure that the light will last you a long time and find itself on many of your sets.Image via lightpanels.Functionality/ OutputWith optional bi-color functionality, the Astra 6X gives you options regarding the variety of light fixtures you can use on set. You’re not locked into daylight or tungsten only. This light also packs a punch. It’s comparable to the output of a 2000W softlight or a 1,000W hardlight equivalent. Earlier Litepanel fixtures would not allow you to diffuse your LED fixtures with heavier diffusions like some 216, 250, or even silk. The 6X solves that problem.LED lighting has evolved immensely in just the few years it’s been on the market. The Astra 6X is a huge step into the future of LED lighting. It’s portability, output, and quality make it a strong contender to be on your next set. Looking for more information on LEDs? Check out these articles. Are the Days of Tungsten Lighting Over? The Future of LED Lighting with the ARRI Skypanel In August, Litepanels released the Astra 6X. We took an in-depth look at this LED fixture, and it may be the perfect tool to have on set.Cover image via Litepanels. Litepanels LED lights have been a staple in the industry since the infancy of the LED light revolution. Their latest release, the Astra 6X, is an impressive LED fixture bound to find its way onto many film sets .EvolutionLED lighting has come a long way in the last six years. When Litepanels first debuted, they didn’t feature a great deal of output. However, what they did have was the potential for this lighting technology to really take off and transition the industry into a more efficient future. The Astra 6X is the next step into the future for Litepanels. It features six times more output than the original Litepanel fixture.last_img read more

It’s Paswan kin versus Cong. veteran in Samastipur

first_imgThe National Democratic Alliance candidate Prince Raj of the Lok Janshakti Party is in a direct contest with mahagathbandhan nominee Ashok Kumar of the Congress for the Samastipur (reserved) Lok Sabha seat for which bypoll is scheduled to be held on October 21.The by-election was necessitated after the sudden demise of the sitting MP Ramchandra Paswan, father of Prince Raj. Ramchandra Paswan who had defeated Ashok Kumar in the last Parliamentary election, was the younger brother of LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan. While Prince Raj is making his electoral debut on an emotional pitch, Ashok Kumar, Congress MLA from Rosera (reserved) Assembly constituency, is appealing to the people to vote for him to raise their voice in Parliament. Joint campaigningOn Thursday, all three top Bihar NDA leaders — Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan and Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi — campaigned together for Prince Raj and addressed a public meeting in Samastipur. The NDA leaders appealed to the people to vote for young Prince Raj for the development of the constituency. There are a total of eight candidates in the fray for the bypoll. Before delimitation the Samastipur seat was known as Rosera (reserved) Lok Sabha seat.In the 2019 election, Ramchandra Paswan had defeated Ashok Kumar by over 2.5 lakh votes. Along with the Samastipur Lok Sabha bypoll, five Assembly constituencies — Nathanagar, Simri Bakhtiyarpur, Darounda, Belhar and Kishanganj — will also go to poll on October 21 as the sitting MLAs had won in the Lok Sabha election.last_img read more

5 athletes suspended for dope violations

first_imgHammer thrower Harvinder Singh Dagar and discus thrower Kripal Singh have been handed two-year suspensions for antidoping rule violations during April’s Federation Cup at Patiala. Both athletes had recorded their personal best efforts during the meet. Dagar, a national champion last year, argued that he took the same supplements which he had consumed at the National Inter-State Championship in Bangalore where he did not test positive. The panel, chaired by RS Chauhan, found him guilty of breach of Article 2.1 which states that it is the duty of an athlete to ensure that no prohibited substance enters his body.Kripal, an inter-university champion and a silver medallist at the Ranchi National Games, did not challenge the laboratory findings.Sachin Kumar, a 400m runner who tested positive during the junior Fed Cup Athletics Championship in March, was also suspended for two years.Weightlifter Taranbir Singh, who tested positive for Methyl Prednisolone, during the All India Police (wrestling cluster) Championship, was suspended for six months after the panel took his poor family background into account.Another wrestler, Sombir had tested positive for methylhexamine and mephentermine during the same event and was handed a two- year ban.last_img read more

Former US vicepresident condemns Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion on Twitter

first_imgVANCOUVER – Former U.S. vice-president Al Gore says the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion is destructive and should be stopped. The environmentalist posted a tweet Thursday saying the pipeline carrying “dirty tar sands oil” would be a step backward in efforts to solve the climate crisis.Tar sands is considered a derogatory term by some for the oilsands in Alberta.Gore says he stands with B.C. Premier John Horgan, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and all of the other Canadians, including First Nations, who are fighting to stop the pipeline owned by Kinder Morgan. The pipeline expansion would triple the flow of heavy oil products from Edmonton to Burnaby, B.C.Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said Thursday she’s confident talks aimed at getting construction of the pipeline expansion back on track will be successful before a May 31 deadline.Notley says she can’t divulge details of talks with Kinder Morgan, but they are focused on the financial viability of the $7.4-billion project and on getting construction restarted this summer.Alberta and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government are in discussions with the company to strike a joint financial arrangement to ensure the project gets built. Trudeau’s government approved expansion of the Trans Mountain line in 2016, but the B.C. government has been fighting it.Last month, Kinder Morgan stopped all non-essential spending on the project and said it wants assurances by the end of this month that the expansion can proceed.(Companies in this story: TSX:KML)last_img read more

The Steelers Have The Best Running BackReceiver Duo Ever

Since the schedule expanded to 16 games in 1978, there have only been 18 tandems of backs and wideouts to each notch 1,500 yards from scrimmage.2The 1995 Detroit Lions actually had two of these pairs: That year, running back Barry Sanders hit the benchmark with two different wide receivers, Herman Moore and Brett Perriman, so Sanders is counted twice in our tally. Among that group, Bell and Brown will rank third all time if they keep up this pace — they’re generating 62.8 percent of their team’s total yards this season, according to Pro-Football-Reference. Their share is not far behind the high mark on this list: Edgerrin James (2,139 yards) and Marvin Harrison (1,667) were responsible for 65.2 percent of the 1999 Colts’ yards. And just ahead of Bell and Brown are another famous duo — Emmitt Smith (2,148) and Michael Irvin (1,603) posted 63.1 percent of the 1995 Cowboys’ yards. This degree of volume obviously requires a heavy — if not reckless — amount of usage. Bell, who leads the NFL with 283 rushes, is on pace to carry the ball 348 times and haul in 92 passes. If the free-agent-to-be Bell does leave Pittsburgh in the offseason, the Steelers seem determined to make sure they’ve wrung every ounce of value they can get out of him first.Meanwhile, Brown’s 160 targets also lead the NFL, as do his 99 catches, by a wide margin. Simply put, no receiver has dominated his position like Brown since Jerry Rice was at his peak. Some are even calling for Brown to be the league’s MVP, an award that no receiver — not even Rice, who was arguably the greatest player in NFL history — has ever hauled in. If the award is going to one member of the Steelers duo, Bell would be the more obvious choice, since running backs occasionally bypass quarterbacks for the award. But it’s almost impossible to determine which skill player is most valuable, even just to the Steelers. And that’s the thing that seems to make the duo unstoppable. Defenses cannot key in on stopping one of the two because it will leave them unprepared for the other. Even though all three Pittsburgh stars have been in the league a while and the Patriots frequently face off against the Steelers, Belichick doesn’t have a lot of experience dealing with Roethlisberger and his two biggest weapons at the same time. Either Roethlisberger or Bell has been injured and missed all or part of every Pats-Steelers matchup after Bell’s rookie year, when he wasn’t nearly the force he is today. And even with the rookie Bell, the Steelers rolled up nearly 500 yards of offense. But the Patriots gained over 600 in a 55-31 victory. But as he prepares for his epic AFC showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend, he could probably skip some of the film study — Pittsburgh’s likely attack plan is so obvious that a first-grader could decipher it. They will run the ball with Le’Veon Bell. They will throw the ball to Antonio Brown. And that’s basically it. (OK, they may also throw the ball to Le’Veon Bell.)Pittsburgh’s holy trinity of Ben Roethlisberger, Brown and Bell — or the Killer B’s, if we must — has always thrived when on the field together. But lately, it’s gotten absurd.Simply put, Bell and Brown are making a very compelling case for being the best running back-wide receiver tandem in NFL history. Currently, Bell is on pace for 2,073 total yards and Brown is tracking for 1,857. That combined projected total of 3,930 yards — or about 2.2 miles — would break the record for the most yards by a RB-WR duo where each totalled at least 1,500. The current record holders won’t be too bent out of shape if that happens, since Bell and Brown set the record in 2014 (the last time Bell played a full season) with a combined 3,926 yards. What makes the pair’s current pace all the more impressive is that Bell labored in three September games this season after refusing to sign a contract all summer; he totaled just 79 yards per game in those first weeks, about half his production in the ensuing 10 games. The last three games in particular have been off the charts. Brown and Bell have combined for 973 yards — or 324 per game. That’s more yards per game than 13 teams currently average. And it represents a stunning 70.5 percent of the Steelers’ total output from scrimmage in that span.
