Illness Forces Iain Glen to Depart Turgenev’s Fortune’s Fool at the Old Vic

first_img London View Comments Due to an undisclosed illness, Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey star Iain Glen has been forced to quit his role of Kuzovkin in Ivan Turgenev’s Fortune’s Fool at London’s Old Vic. He will be replaced by William Houston in the production, which is scheduled to run through February 22. A statement from the Old Vic’s website read as follows: “Unfortunately Iain Glen is unwell and has been advised by his doctor to withdraw from Fortune’s Fool in order to regain his full health. We are delighted to announce that William Houston will be taking on the role of Kuzovkin and in the meantime, Iain’s understudy, Patrick Cremin continues to give a sterling performance. Everyone at The Old Vic wish Iain a speedy recovery and thank William for stepping into the role at short notice.”center_img In Fortune’s Fool, a penniless gentleman-in-residence welcomes a pair of newlyweds as they arrive at their country estate. Their wealthy and mischievous neighbour Tropatchov calls by for a seemingly innocent celebratory lunch. Fueled by champagne the proceedings degenerate, leading to a shocking revelation with far-reaching consequences. Houston’s stage credits include Troilus and Cressida, Henry IV and Henry V for the RSC. His screen credits include Sherlock Holmes and Clash of the Titans. Glen starred opposite Nicole Kidman on Broadway in The Blue Room. His numerous London stage credits include Uncle Vanya, Ghosts and The Crucible. Glen’s additional film and TV credits include The Iron Lady, Harry Brown, Spooks and The Magdalen Martyr. Fortune’s Fool was last seen on Broadway in 2002. Both Frank Langella and Alan Bates won Tonys for their performances in the production.last_img read more

Panthers fire coach Bob Boughner, reportedly ‘close’ to hiring Joel Quenneville

first_imgAssistant coach Paul McFarland also was relieved of his duties.”We made a tough decision (Sunday) and have relieved Bob Boughner of his duties as head coach,” general manager Dale Tallon said in a statement. “We didn’t meet expectations this season and share responsibility for that fact. Related News “After careful evaluation, we have determined that this is a necessary first step for our young team and we will seek to identify a transformative, experienced head coach with Stanley Cup pedigree to lead our team going forward. We’re grateful to Bob, Paul and their families for their hard work and their dedication to the Panthers organization and we wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.”According to Sportsnet, the Panthers already have started the hiring process and former Blackhawks and Blues coach Joel Quenneville is the top candidate to take over the team. There is a real sense today that the process between FLA and Joel Quenneville is much further along than many of us realized. It’s not a done deal, but it’s close. It would not be a surprise if this process closes in the near future.— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) April 7, 2019Per the report, the hiring of Quenneville isn’t a “done deal,” but the hiring could be happening very soon.In his two seasons with Florida, Boughner went 79-62-22. This past season, the team went 36-32-14. The Panthers have decided to cut ties with Bob Boughner. The team announced Sunday it fired its head coach two years after it hired him. Boughner still had one more year left on his contract. While the Panthers were solid on offense, their defense struggled throughout the season. The team ranked 28th out of 31 when it came to goals allowed. As the Panthers’ season came to a close, the missed opportunity to go to the playoffs marks the 16th time in the past 18 seasons that Florida has not made the postseason. The last time the Panthers won a playoff series was 1996. Since then, the Panthers have limped along in the league, with the 25-year-old team now on the hunt for its 16th coach in franchise history. Go Ahead and Change Your Mind

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 3rd book: Eat Their Lunch “The first ever playbook for B2B salespeople on how to win clients and customers who are already being serviced by your competition.” Buy Now It’s okay to change your mind. You can be committed to some position for years or decades and later to decide that you believe or support something else.New InformationOver time, you should be getting smarter. Being entirely consistent in everything you believe can mean that you aren’t growing. There has never been a time where so much new knowledge is being created, and with it, the occasional new wisdom. Not changing your mind about anything means that you are not taking in new information, new knowledge, or new wisdom.Ignoring new evidence means stagnation. Consistency in the face of new information and new evidence is stagnation.New BeliefsWhat beliefs have you changed in the last few years? It’s unlikely that you’ve changed your religion or your political affiliation. It’s equally likely that you share both of these beliefs with your parents, not to suggest that you shouldn’t.This economy is a different economy than your parent’s and grandparent’s. The challenges are different and more difficult. The opportunities are greater, and some of the obstacles have all but disappeared. The ideas that may have served you well three decades ago will now do more harm than good. Have your beliefs about the economy changed?Work is different now. Work was different 30, 40, and 70 years ago. Careers were different. Does the word “work” or “career” mean something different to you now? Have your ideas changed? How to Change Your MindYou shouldn’t be embarrassed to have changed your mind. It is a sign that you are learning, discovering, and growing. It’s more dangerous to stay locked to a belief that no longer serves you, especially when there is a good reason to adopt a new idea. When pressed about having abandoned a long-held position, you simply say, “I have changed my mind about that. I no longer believe what I used to believe.” No apologies. No shame. Instead, growth. If your beliefs haven’t changed, it’s worth taking them time to examine them and see if they still serve you, and to measure them against new evidence and new information. If you haven’t changed your mind about anything, it may indicate a need to explore ideas that make you uncomfortable.last_img read more

ECSA Shipping Remains a Solid Contributor to EU

first_imgzoom The shipping industry’s total employment contribution has increased to 2.1 million people while the total GDP contribution is estimated to have been EUR 140 billion in 2015.The European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) update on the economic value of the EU shipping industry, commissioned from Oxford Economics, shows that the sector directly employed 640,000 people and supported an EUR 57 billion contribution to GDP in 2015.ECSA’s report further indicates that, at EUR 89,000 per worker in 2015, productivity in the EU shipping industry remains above the EU average.“The latest Oxford Economics figures underline that shipping remains a solid contributor to the European agenda of jobs and growth,” Patrick Verhoeven, ECSA Secretary General, said.“Compared to 2013 figures, we see a modest increase in both employment and value-added figures.”The Oxford Economics report finds that around four-fifths of direct employment occurs at sea. Officers account for an estimated 42% of positions at sea, and ratings 58%. 40% of the 516,000 seafarers employed in the EU shipping industry are estimated to be EU/EEA nationals.“Although it is an estimated figure, the percentage of EU/EEA seafarers appears to remain fairly stable,” Verhoeven said, adding that this is a positive sign, given the challenging market circumstances most European shipping companies still operate in.last_img read more
