Reichenberger holds another record; WMS boys win golf tourney; Oxford baseball team above .500…

first_img6Wellington46.5 RankTeam NameScore 5Belle Plaine66 9. Oxford baseball team…The Oxford boys baseball team is currently 4-5 overall and 3-3 in South Central Border League play. On April 6, Oxford split with Cedar Vale/Dexter losing game one 2-1 and winning the second 8-3. In the second game, Oggie Shimkus got the win with five innings pitched and striking out seven batters. Grant Smith was the big hitter for the Wildcats with a triple, two walks, and three RBIs.Quote from Oxford head coach Kyle Green (who is related to the head Oxford boys basketball coach):“Great day for baseball in Dexter. We had a heck of a 1st game with them. We led 1-0 for a long time, I believe into the 5th. Grant pitched his tailend off. He gave up 1 hit, a solo homerun, but continued to compete and battle. I was proud of his effort on the bump. We had our chances to tie the game and take the lead. I got a little aggressive with our kids on the base paths and put us in a bad situation at the end of the game. That’s on me as a coach. Credit our kids, they battled their tails off against a ranked opponent.Game 2, we came out strong. I think our kids had confidence from game 1 that carried over. We continued to have quality at bats. Oggie Shimkus did a great job on the mound as well, I was proud of his effort. Camren Clements came in and got in a tough situation and competed and battled out of it. It was a solid win for us, CVD went to state last year, and our kids were excited to be able to compete with them over two games. That is a solid ball club and with as many young kids as we are playing, as many as 6 freshman were on the field in game 2, it’s a true confidence builder. “•••••Then Oxford defeated Derby Homeschool 5-4 on April 10.Quote from Green:Derby has a solid team. Their catcher has signed with a Minnesota Juco, and he was a stud. One of the better kids we will see all year. I was very proud of our kids. It was a back and forth game, we took a lead, they came back and took the lead, and we battled to win the game. Our kids just kept competing and mentally they never got down. Great win for us and the best part of it was it was a total team win on the mound and at the plate.•••••Oxford would play third ranked Udall, losing 9-2 and 11-4.Quote from Green:This was a double header scheduled by Udall and us to replace a game we both lost making it non-league. I was more than happy to play them in a non-league, they are a darn good team, and we got better from playing them. The first game, we had a 1-0 lead into the 4th I believe. Grant Smith pitched well, he had another strong outing, but we had too many errors in the field. That’s just part of being a young team. The thing I loved is that our kids didn’t get down on themselves when they struggled. They battled through it. Dylan Reuter had another solid night at the plate in game 1, as did Smith. Dalton Silhan has been struggling at the plate, but he just keeps working, and found a way to get on base. He barreled up a couple of balls really well tonight. Game 2, we had a real struggle getting out of the first inning, between errors and Udall’s timely hitting, we were down 7-0 right off the bat. Our kids just kept fighting. We got it to 10-4, loaded the bases in the 5th, and Dalton hit a ball about as hard as we have all year. Tanner Roberts at 2B made a great play on it to double us off. Another inch or two and we score two runs, it’s 10-6 and we are still rolling with 1 out. But that’s the way baseball goes, it’s really a fickle game, and we were on the wrong side of it. Udall is a quality team and well coached, which is why they are ranked where they are.We have them again for the league double dip at home. We now get ready for a long week next week, with Flinthills on monday and Fredonia/Elk Valley on Thursday at home. Both games have their challenges, Flinthills is unranked, but split with Udall and currently is in 1st place in league. They are well coached and have quality pitching. Fredonia/Elk Valley is a 3A coop team and that will present a challenge playing a bigger squad. We just need to keep working in practice on the little things, quality at bats, hitting our spots on the mound, and gloving it up in the field. Do the ordinary things extra-ordinarily well, and we will be fine. Augusta33.50053.625 4Conway Springs67 See full results here: 5.
