College roundup: Pepperdine pulls off upset vs. Santa Clara in overtime

first_imgChase Griffin scored a career-best 34 points, including eight in overtime, to lift Pepperdine to an 89-82 victory over Santa Clara on Monday at Firestone Fieldhouse. Griffin, who scored three 3-pointers, shot 11 of 16 from the field for Pepperdine (8-22, 4-10 West Coast). Kingsley Costain had 12 points, all on 3-pointers, and Shane Griffin added 10for the Waves. Pepperdine is fifth with a score of 597, and UCLA is 12th at 612. Schreefel tied her season-low of the year with a 72 in the first round, then equaled that in the second round that featured four birdies. Schreefel’s two-over 144 has her in a four-way tie for sixth that includes UCLA’s Hannah Jue. Misun Cho is in a three-way tie for 11th after shooting a five-over 147 for Pepperdine. MEN’S GOLF Cal State Northridge’s Luis Kim fired a three-over 147 over the first two rounds and is in sixth place after two rounds at the Anteater Invitational at Big Canyon Country Club in Irvine. Kim opened with a two over-par 73 in the morning round and came back with a second-round 73. He is six shots off the pace set by Domingo Jojola of San Francisco who carded a two-round three-under 141. Host UC Irvine leads the 10-team field after the Anteaters posted a 36-hole score of 596 to lead the Arizona “B” team by four shots. CSUN is sixth. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Pepperdine freshman Teena Wickett was voted to the All-West Coast Conference first team as well as the 2007 All-Freshman team.
